Have you ever wondered how your body actually knows when it’s thirsty? Scientists have been trying to understand how our bodies regulate thirst for more than a century and recently scientists from University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) figured it out.

The scientists discovered that by sending messages about the salt content of the stomach and intestines, the body communicates when it is thirsty and when thirst has been quenched.

“We’ve discovered a new way the gut talks to the brain,” says UCSF graduate student Christopher Zimmerman.

Tips for Gutting in Your Water:

  1. Keep a reusable water bottle present and within your eyeshot. This way you always have it handy and you always have the reminder

  2. Add fruits, chia seeds, and flavours. This makes your water more fun to drink and also makes it feel like a treat instead of a chore. 

  3. Drink 50 oz right when you wake up and again before lunch. This will not only help to ensure you’re a well-hydrated cucumber, but it will also help kickstart your metabolism and help with any digestive issues you’re having. 

  4. Eat your water. Make sure your diet is rich in water-based veggies as well like cucumbers, tomatoes, and plenty of fruits. 

  5. Use a tracker. There are plenty of apps out there that help to remind you to drink your water. If you’re someone with a fancy wellness watch, add a reminder. Use technology to your wellness advantage.
